Urban Sprouts Farms: Weathering the Storm

Georgia is well known for its variable weather conditions, from tropical cyclones and flooding to severe drought, freezing rain on Monday and 80° and sunny by Friday . While Georgia farmers are well acquainted with the vagaries inherent in the weather, it can still mean getting into sticky situations when the weather turns ugly. Urban Sprouts Farms in Atlanta learned this lesson after severe storms tore through the Atlanta metro area in August of 2016 causing their high tunnel to collapse. The plants under the high tunnel survived the storm but had to be removed to initiate repairs on the tunnel resulting in lost planting time plus the cost of repairs. The Farmer Fund provided a matching grant to help keep Urban Sprouts farming and providing fresh veggies to their direct customers at the farm and patrons of the Grant Park Farmers Market.
